Online Dating: Practices, Norms, and the Augmentation of Reality

Research methods:

  • Qualitative: Interviews — coding for themes using NVivo

  • Quantitative: Survey analysis using SPSS

Potential Application

Returning to college after the height of the COVID pandemic, my research partners and I were curious to learn more about online dating, something that we saw discussed often during the pandemic. We conducted qualitative research on this topic using interviews, and learned a lot about the practices and norms on dating apps. This included the interplay between online and in-person dating and practices on dating apps such as analyzing photos and filtering for certain criteria.

In our quantitative research, I researched how online daters view relationships: how they think online dating affects relationships and their views on casual dating and long-distance dating. I used SPSS to analyze the survey results undertaken by Ipsos Public Affairs regarding online dating.

This research could be used by dating apps since knowing how some users utilize and perceive their apps can be helpful for marketing or revamping.
