Application
From the height of the HIV epidemic to today, gay bars have been havens for LGBTQ+ communities. Presently, HIV support groups continue to provide support and community for those living with HIV. Through archival research, interviews, and participant observation at an HIV support group, I found that gay bars and HIV support groups in San Antonio were and are not isolated. They belong to a network of care that spanned the city in the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century, linked to other organizations, movements, and places of community. The bars were not just places people went to drink and socialize, they also hosted large art exhibits, fundraisers, and participated in HIV/AIDS education and prevention.
